CENTRE FOR ARCTIC MEDICINE

The mission of the Centre for Arctic Medicine is to advance the sustainable development of health and wellbeing in northern circumpolar area through research, education and social influence. Our basic functions are co-ordinating our research program, graduate school and master's program, as well as acting in national and international collaborative organisations. We are also in the publishing organisation of the International Journal of Circumpolar Health.

The Centre for Arctic Medicine is located in the Thule Institute, on the Linnanmaa campus area of the University of Oulu.

The history of the Centre for Arctic Medicine begins in 1969, when the Nordic Council of Ministers founded the Nordic Secretariat for Arctic Medicine in Oulu. The Secretariat was attached to the University of Oulu in 1995 and the name was changed to the Institute for Arctic Medicine. In the beginning of 2001 the name of the institute was changed to the Centre for Arctic Medicine. It was also attached to the Thule Institute, the Oulu University unit co-ordinating the focus area of Northern and Environmental Issues.
