PROGRAMME CONTENT

MCH consists of compulsory and elective courses organised either by the home university or by an partner or exchange university. Elective courses enable students to focus their studies according their personal interests and career plans. Each student is expected to compose a personal study plan (PSP), which will be updated regularly. A possible outline for a study schedule can be found here.

The curriculum for the students starting in 2011 can be found here.

The curriculum outline enables the MCH students to complete a substantial amount of studies  by distance learning. The curriculum below applies only to students who started in 2009.

Core topics

  • Characteristics of life in a Northern environment (culture, physical environment, economics, social structures and working in northern conditions)
  • Specific features of health, wellbeing, cultural transitions and illnesses of northern residents (holistic view)
  • Special needs of people living in the circumpolar region in connection to health promotion, prevention, care and rehabilitation
  • Specific characteristics of diseases, health care systems, and health and wellbeing services in circumpolar region
  • Connections between the northern environment and human health & wellbeing

CURRICULUM OUTLINE


1) BASIC STUDIES (40 ECTS/ 20 North American Credit Hours, compulsory)


- Introduction to Health and Wellbeing: Seminars I & II (4 ECTS)

  On-line courses (36 ECTS/18 NA Credit Hours):

- Health, Security and Wellbeing in the North (6 ECTS)

- Health Impacts of Climate Change (4 ECTS)

- Conflict, Politics and Ethnicity (7.5 ECTS)

- Comparative Approach to Health and Wellbeing Among Northern Populations ( 6 ECTS)

- Health Promotion (7.5 ECTS)

- Basics in eHealth (5 ECTS)


2) IN-DEPTH STUDIES (at least 80 ECTS/40 NA Credit Hours, elective on-line and on-site courses )


- Thesis and Thesis Seminars (30 ECTS/15 NA Credit Hours)

- Research Methodology and research ethics (15-20 ECTS)
- Profession-specific Applied studies (20-35 ECTS/ 10-17.5 NA Credit Hours)

- Field placement (10-15 ECTS)
